What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is based on the idea that each of us has an inner world made up of different “parts,” like members of an internal family. These parts take on different roles to help us navigate life. For example, some parts try to keep us safe by working hard or avoiding risk, while others might hold painful memories or strong emotions from the past.
Sometimes these parts get stuck in extreme roles or conflict with one another. For instance, one part might push you to achieve while another part just wants to rest, leaving you feeling torn or overwhelmed. IFS helps you approach each part with curiosity and compassion, rather than trying to silence or fight it. Every part has a positive intention, even if its actions sometimes cause distress.
At the heart of IFS is the belief that everyone has a core Self — a calm, compassionate and wise centre that can lead your inner system. Through guided exploration, you can connect with this Self and help heal wounded parts, release burdens from the past and restore harmony among all aspects of who you are.
IFS is a gentle and empowering approach. It can support healing from trauma, improve relationships, and bring greater clarity and self-acceptance. Instead of focusing on “fixing” you, it helps you build an understanding and compassionate relationship with yourself, allowing for meaningful and lasting change from within.
